Instalação no Ubuntu ...

Boas.
Antes de mais, queria agradecer a preciosa ajuda que tenho recebido aqui neste fórum, mas estou confuso, pois pensava que sempre me logava na maquina tornava-me root, e quando fosse para fazer updates o SO simplesmente confirmava que era eu (o root), que estava a fazer as actualizações. Ora isso não se verifica, primeiro pela opção de quando faço su e coloco a minha pass da um erro de falha de autentificação e quando instalo software pergunta-me se sou o root ou n .
Digo isso, porque ao tentar instalar esse bendito Turbogears 2.0, esta a dar um novo erro relacionado com o anterior, ou seja:

Perhaps your account does not have write access to this directory? If the
installation directory is a system-owned directory, you may need to sign in

directory, preferably one that is listed in your PYTHONPATH environment
variable.
